"For example, if the fun method of Spain's cultural center in Manila, the Instituto Cervantes, were in use when we were in college, maybe more Filipinos would be fluent in Spanish and now we could be paid earning double the salaries of those who use English in call centers. . Looking back on my Spanish, Latin and German classes I can still recall enduring long hours of mindless conjugation. . Thus, writing history in Filipino has always been one of my unrealized projects. It is one thing to speak Filipino, another to write in the language. Perhaps practice makes perfect, and now I have a very useful tool in the recently published Gabay sa Editing sa Wikang Filipino (Tuon sa Pagbaybay) published by the University of the Philippines Sentro ng Wikang Filipino [Filipino Language Center]. "I am aware of what the late Cory Aquino has done to go against dictatorship and unite the people in EDSA and how Ninoy Aquino was assassinated and he believed that the Filipino [was] worth dying for but we can t continue to be blinded by all this yellow! Natatawa nalang ako sa mga proposal to rename EDSA to Cory Ave., Cory to be a National Hero, Cory to be on the 500 peso bill (tacky design, btw), and a Cory Aquino Day (as if we didn t have enough national holidays). Ma pointed out that we drivers curse EDSA a lot for its awful traffic. Turning EDSA into Cory Ave. would mean, Tang ina talagang Cory Ave. yan o, ang traffic! Diba ang panget? And Cory could ve cancelled our foreign debt during her presidency. And the CARPER issue. But of course, no one says anything about it. I don t like the Filipino culture of sanctifying the dead. Filipino Librarian: September 2006

"The film was so authentic that I was not quite surprised when the lead character passed through very tight alleys, encountered lots of children and adults in those alleys, and even stepped on some dog poop. It must have looked like a very different world to the audience, whose subway trains at peak times are not even half as packed as LRT/MRT trains in Metro Manila. they have laws penalizing the owners of dogs whose poop is not picked up right away. There was probably a lot that the audience missed, too. Because, one, the film did not make a big deal out of the facts of Filipino life (e.g., the Nazareno, Sto. Nino and Virgin Mary side by side), but presented them as, well, facts of life; and two, the subtitles weren't very good. The first was mos" [13]

The deadline for this one is September 30. The prizes range from P2,000 to P20,000 for winners in both contests. It is worth noting that the first requires the use of Filipino, while the other includes Tagalog. This, perhaps, was meant to highlight the difference between Filipino and Tagalog, that one is not equivalent to the other. But what if, for instance, someone submits an essay written in Tagalog for the Gantimpalang Collantes? Will it be accepted as having been written in "Filipino"? I was also told that my voter's ID and ballot would be mailed to me, so there's no need to go back to the consulate. My conclusion? The people in charge of the process know what they're doing, it's the people in charge of the who need to attend sessions on web design and usability.4. Finally, there's the fact that the consulate is not easily accessible in terms of its location and office hours.
