"IU stands for "International Unit", and it can be either volume or weight, depending on what you're looking at. So....moles? It has to be something linear related to a molarity, but I can't find out how to interpret it. "Dosing Units IL-2 Units: The standard measure of an amount IL-2 is the International Unit (IU) which technically is not a fixed amount but the amount that produces a fixed effect in a specific assay of biological activity. In practice, the manufacture of IL-2 is standardized and there is a conversion between drug weight and International Units. It is 1.1mg IL-2 = 18 million IU (abbreviated 18 MIU). This is for Chiron IL-2 which is the only IL-2 presently approved in the US, and as far as I know anywhere. The precise definition of one IU differs from substance to substance and is established by international agreement for each substance. There is no equivalence among different substances; for instance, one IU of vitamin E does not contain the same number of milligrams as one IU of vitamin A. For example, vitamin E exists in a number of different forms having different biological activities. Enzyme unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The enzyme unit was adopted by the International Union of Biochemistry in 1964. Since the minute is not an SI unit, the enzyme unit is discouraged in favour of the katal, the unit recommended by the General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1978 and officially adopted in 1999. One katal is the amount of enzyme that converts 1 mole of substrate per second, so 1 U = 1/60 micro katal = 16.67 nano katal. . The enzyme unit should not be confused with the International Unit (IU), an unrelated measure of biologically active substances. Enzyme catalysis ^ Nomenclature Committee of the Internatio" [11]

This type of measure is used for the fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D and E) and certain hormones, enzymes, and biologicals (such as vaccines). The definition of an international unit (IU) is generally arbitrary, technical, and eminently forgettable. For example, an IU of vitamin E is the specific biological activity of 0.671 milligrams of d-alpha-tocopherol. Recombinant factor VIII for hemophilia A - The Clinical Advisor

"One international unit (IU) of factor VIII approximates the activity of factor VIII in 1 mL of normal human plasma.  Clinical trials: The efficacy of this product was evaluated in a study in which patients received Xyntha on a prophylaxis treatment regimen with on-demand treatment given as clinically indicated. This study enrolled 94 patients with baseline factor VIII activity 2%. They all received Xyntha in the open-label period, and 53 were given Xyntha for treatment of 187 bleeding episodes. Most of the bleeding episodes resolved with one or two infusions. In an ongoing, open-label study of Xyntha in surgical prophylaxis, an interim analysis showed that for 21 surgical patients, the investigators' ratings of efficacy at the end of surgery and at the end of the initial post-op period were excellent or good for all assessments. A formulation of B. thuringiensis with a potency of 1,000 IU/mg is, therefore, equal to the international standard. What’s the difference between milligram (mg), microgram (mcg), and International Unit (IU)?

"An IU (International Unit) is a unit of measurement for vitamins and other specific biologically active substances. The equivalency of one IU differs from substance to substance and is established by international agreement for each substance. For instance, one IU of vitamin E does not contain the same number of milligrams as one IU of vitamin D. In addition, vitamin E exists in a number of different forms having different biological activities. Rather than specifying the precise type and mass of vitamin E in a supplement, the Supplement Facts label specifies the number of International Units of vitamin E which is based upon what form of vitamin E has been u" [40]

Ask an Expert: International Unit

"Answer: The International Unit (IU) is a measure of biological activity or effect, whereas milligram (mg) is a unit of mass or weight. Most drug products are expressed in mg; however, some substances—antibiotics, hormone products, vaccines, and vitamins—are measured in terms of IU which represents an international standard for the biological activity expected with a one IU dose of a given product. As a result, one IU is determined independent of mass and may differ from substance to substance.
