"Nitro completes the IrDA stack on Newton OS 2.1 devices (MP2x00 and eMate) by providing the TinyTP and IrCOMM layers. . Introduction . The IrDA stack on Newton OS 2.1 devices is missing the TinyTP, IrCOMM and IrOBEX layer required by almost any IrDA capable peer device. Nitro adds these missing layers via a Newton OS Communication Tool. Its usage is comparable to using the serial or IrDA communications tools. . To use Nitro, install either NitroMP2100D.pkg (German MP2100), NitroMP2x00US.pkg (US MP2x000) or NitroeMate.pkg (eMate). It is also recommended to install Neo which provides OBEX data exchange over IrDA and TCP/IP. In addition, IC/VC is a use" [1]

Windows XP provides computers with the ability to connect to peripheral devices, such as printers and modems, by using infrared light, in the same way that a TV remote control sends signals. This is especially important to users of laptop and notebook computers, because they often need to easily connect to peripherals at a variety of locations. Use of infrared connections eliminates the need to carry the cumbersome and expensive cables that otherwise might be required. IrDA (Infrared Data Association) - Mobile terms glossary - GSMArena.com

"IrDA (Infrared Data Association) . . Infrared connectivity is an old wireless technology used to connect two electronic devices. It uses a beam of infrared light to transmit information and so requires direct line of sight and operates only at close range. . IR was superseded by Bluetooth, which has the advantage of operating at longer distances (around 30 feet) and being omnidirectional. . Many home devices such as TVs and DVD players still use IR remote controls. Some smartphones are capable of using their IR port to control these devises but that usually requires" [35]

IrSimple communications has increased the transmission speed to a minimum of 4 times faster than conventional IrDA. The speed of Giga-IR is approximately 250 times faster than IrSimple's speed of 4Mbps. With Giga-IR, a music video* can be transfer to another device within 0.1 second.
