Base Camp

"That inspired a story from my mom, who remembered Uncle Bud taking her and my aunts up to the corner soda fountain; his ulterior motive being that he needed a bromo fizz to take care of last night's hangover. As a WWII vet in the Pacific, Uncle Bud got a full honor guard and rifle salute at Fort Snelling cemetery. My uncle Larry, who was Bud's guardian during his last years, and the eldest son in the family, was given the flag from his casket. We adjourned to Manning's bar in Southeast Minneapolis afterwards. It was a little neighborhood joint with wood paneling that welcomed gray-haired regulars and eager-eyed college kids with equal openness. Trains ran by an elevated trestle just outside. It was a hangout of Bud's for a long time. A waitress who had worked there for forty years remembered him. And his girlfriend Ginger. I pictured the Ginger of Gillig" [1]

MPR: One grave, one tribute

"Steve Johnson is hammering in a pole that will hold one of about 900 flags in total to be on display at Fort Snelling. Not only will American flags go up, but flags from the 50 states and American Legion. . Johnson eyes the posts to make sure they're straight. The white poles he hammers in shine in bright contrast to the emerald green grass. The white headstones, all the same, but bearing different names, stand like soldiers row after precise row. . Johnson served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. For him, putting up these flags is an act of respect for those buried here. . This is my cemetery too. This isn't just my job. This is my cemetery." If a report was not filed, the veteran will not be found in the index. If a report was filed with the Adjutant General/Department of Veterans Affairs, there will be an index entry. If a report was not filed, even though a particular veteran would have qualified, there will not be an index entry. If a report was filed for a veteran buried earlier—e.g. a Civil War or Spanish-American War veteran who died before 1927—there will be an index entry. "Alleged swindle unravels at Fort Snelling cemetery: Worker accused of faking Naval Reserve service to get paid leave. --> . . COPYRIGHT 2006 Saint Paul Pioneer Press . Byline: David Hawley May 9--For more than three years, officials at Fort Snelling National Cemetery understood when Adrian Crump requested paid leave to serve as a lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve. He worked, after all, at a place dedicated to honor those who had served their country. So it came as a shock when officials learned that Crump's record of active military duty was more than a little exaggerated. In fact, Hennepin County prosecutors said, it was fabricated. "Historic Fort Snelling The story of Fort Snelling is the story of the development of the U.S. Northwest. Ft Snelling is located on top of a river bluff where the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers meet. In 1805 Lt. Zebulon purchased 100,000 acres in the area. After the War of 1812, the US Federal Government built forts and installed Indian agents between Lake Michigan and the Missouri River. Nick Coleman: A remedy for Fort Snelling's forgotten war
